Organizational Overview

Black Men Vote (BMV), a 501c3 and affiliated organizations, Black Men Vote Civic Action Fund (BMV-CAF), a 501c4, and Black Men Vote PAC (BMV-PAC), a 527, are seeking an experienced and ambitious Director of Development to lead the organization’s fundraising efforts to support its mission to empower, educate, and mobilize Black men to build lasting change in our communities.

Black Men Vote builds power where it matters most, by equipping Black men with the knowledge, tools, and confidence to lead in our democracy. Through voter education and registration, community organizing, research, and powerful partnerships, we turn awareness into action and ensure Black men’s voices drive lasting change.

Black Men Vote is a pioneering organization centered on empowering Black men to actively participate in the electoral process, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are addressed within the political arena. BMV focuses on direct voter contact, voter registration, and community organizing to achieve our goals.

Founded over five years ago, Black Men Vote spent millions in 2024 and 2025 on its efforts to register, educate, and mobilize Black men in battleground states through a variety of communications, including social media, barbershop talks, radio, and canvassing efforts.

Black Men Vote is poised to take a leadership role in this moment of inflection and change in our politics.

Position Overview
 
The Director of Development will lead all aspects of Black Men Vote’s fundraising, ensuring the organization has the resources to meet its ambitious goals. This role will be responsible for developing and implementing a robust development strategy, building processes and donor management systems to steward funders, and establishing and strengthening relationships with new and existing donors.

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Development will work closely with Black Men Vote’s leadership to leverage networks, cultivate new relationships, and facilitate donor engagement opportunities. The Director will be a thought partner to the Executive Director in planning and funding the strategic growth of Black Men Vote.
The ideal candidate brings solid experience in political fundraising and a passion for increasing Black men’s political power. The Director is a talented communicator who can build relationships with individual and institutional donors, develop systems and processes around donor stewardship, and lead the design and execution of a comprehensive, ambitious fundraising strategy.

Key Responsibilities
 

  • Develop and execute a comprehensive fundraising strategy that supports the organization’s ambitious vision and goals, in partnership with the Executive Director
  • Cultivate relationships, facilitate engagement opportunities, and solicit contributions from a portfolio of new and existing donors
  • Establish and implement the infrastructure needed to reach fundraising goals through partnerships, individual donors, grants, and events 
  • Serve as a trusted thought partner to the Executive Director, driving organizational priorities and delivering timely fundraising projections and updates
  • Collaborate with and support BMV’s leadership and Board of Directors to establish and strengthen donor relationships
  • Develop compelling messaging and content for fundraising materials
  • Drive fundraising best practices, including systems utilization, research and prospecting, donor reporting, data review, and donor communications


Key Qualifications and Attributes
 
  • 8+ years of political and nonprofit fundraising, including experience developing plans in multi-channel fundraising, ideally in a mix of 527, 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 organizations
  • Experience building strong relationships with institutional and individual donors and prospects
  • Strong command of fundraising best practices and demonstrated success building processes and donor management systems to steward funders
  • Demonstrated success in managing and growing a robust fundraising portfolio of donors
  • Persuasive communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to successfully tailor messaging for different audiences
  • Excellent listening skills and an ability to engage with a diverse group of donors and prospects in a thoughtful manner
  • Proven ability to achieve results, perform well under pressure, and meet deadlines
  • Excellent project management skills with a strong eye for detail and a focus on results


Salary and Location

The annual base salary for this position is $120,000, with the potential for cycle bonuses.

There is a preference for candidates who reside in the DC metro area. Outstanding candidates, particularly those on the East Coast, may be considered. Candidates must be willing to travel as needed.
