Position Overview

The Human Rights Campaign is seeking a creative and experienced Deputy Director for Digital Marketing – Programs and Partnerships. 

The Deputy Director leads on all partnership and cause marketing initiatives and digital marketing campaigns related to non-political content. Working directly with HRC and HRC Foundation programs, the Deputy Director will create and implement strategies to help expand HRC’s brand reach and online presence through content creation, management of digital platforms, and organic and paid content marketing.

This position requires a person with superb communications skills and an understanding of brand and voice, a strong command of digital marketing, a keen eye for engaging content and a deep desire to learn from and collaborate with colleagues.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders on projects, content and organizational priorities to drive digital strategies for programmatic work. 
  • Develop and execute strategic digital marketing campaigns from conception to implementation.
  • Lead on strategy and execution for cause marketing and partnership initiatives.
  • Maintain editorial calendar of noteworthy dates and determine HRC’s strategy for key dates.
  • Direct overall marketing strategy, including digital media efforts, print media efforts and design elements and brand management and microsites for HRC’s largest events including Time to THRIVE, Chefs for Equality and the HRC National Dinner.
  • Collaborate with design and video teams to create integrated marketing plans for key events.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with current and potential brand ambassadors and partner organizations.
  • Ensure brand integrity on campaigns and digital platforms and help maintain and enforce editorial style guidelines.
  • Produce creative, timely content for the organization’s website, blog and social networking sites.
  • Analyze website and social media statistics to develop content.
  • Manage, mentor and support three staff members.  
  • Track new and changing digital trends and initiate the use of new technologies to improve HRC’s work.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Candidate Attributes and Qualifications

All candidates should bring creativity, curiosity, excellent judgment and prioritize collaboration and relationship building with colleagues. Candidates should be highly organized, detail-oriented and thrive handling multiple projects simultaneously in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with quick deadlines. 

Key Qualifications: 

  • Five to seven years’ experience leading on digital marketing campaigns.
  • Experience with web content management systems, support ticketing systems, blog maintenance, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok, and Snapchat and other social media tools.
  • Experience with listening tools such as Sprout Social, TrackMaven, Hootsuite, Buffer, etc.
  • Passion for and expertise with using digital tools organizing to drive action and engagement. 
  • Talent for communicating online; excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Ability to lead, model, and embed equity, diversity and inclusion principles. 
  • Strong commitment to HRC’s mission and goals. 
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Google Analytics.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or other graphic editing applications.

Additional desirable qualifications: 

  • Interest in PHP coding and template development 
  • Extensive knowledge of AP style 
  • Ability to copy edit 

All positions at the Human Rights Campaign and/or the Human Rights Campaign Foundation may require travel on a regular basis or periodically. Where the need arises for business travel, appropriate compensation as outlined by the Fair Labor Standards Act will apply. 


This is a full-time position, preferably based in Washington D.C. Additional locations will be considered for candidates who meet the desired qualifications and are available to work east coast hours.
