Every day, the members of 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East save lives, deliver babies and care for the sick, seniors and people with disabilities. We are frontline caregivers in hospitals, nursing homes, homecare, clinics, pharmacies and all other areas of the healthcare industry. We are nurses, nurse aides, techs, lab workers, clerks, housekeepers, dietary workers, transporters, pharmacists, social workers and many other types of medical professionals.

Position Overview
1199SEIU is seeking an accomplished, strategic leader to serve as Chief Financial Officer. The CFO will be responsible for all aspects of the union’s financial, investment, and risk management operations.
The CFO will oversee 1199SEIU’s budget and finances of over $240 million and be responsible for strategically aligning the financial resources and operations with the union’s strategic goals.
Reporting directly to the Secretary-Treasurer, the CFO will provide accounting, budgetary, operational, and programmatic support to all union programs and activities. The CFO will also oversee the union’s investments and the audit process.
The CFO will serve as a thought partner and trusted counsel to the Secretary-Treasurer and executive officers, providing financial analysis and forecasts to inform strategic decision-making. The CFO will be a trusted steward of members’ dues and ensure the highest levels of fiscal responsibility.
The CFO will manage a talented, dedicated team of over fifteen staff and will serve on the executive management team.
The ideal candidate is a financial strategist who brings extensive financial expertise as well as superb interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate with a diverse group of stakeholders. The next CFO will have unquestionable integrity, trustworthiness, and a deep commitment to working people and social and racial justice.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the union’s financial, investment, and risk management operations
- Set the tone of fiduciary responsibility across the union
- Actively manage day-to-day operations, ensuring quality, effective internal controls, and the strong stewardship of members’ dues
- Set clear financial strategies and lead long-term financial forecasting, budgeting, and planning in partnership with executive leadership
- Work closely with the Secretary-Treasurer to lead the annual budgeting and planning process, ensuring the budget is aligned with the organization’s strategic objectives
- Prepare accurate and timely financial forecasts, analyses, and reports for 1199SEIU’s programs and activities
- Provide strategic counsel, financial analysis, and financial forecasts to the executive officers
- Maintain and monitor insurance coverage and policies, including automobile; provide recommendations to Car committee
- Manage a high-performing team of 15+ staff as well as vendors and consultants
- Oversee accounting control systems and internal audits, ensuring the accurate and timely production of accounting information and financial reports
- Serve as the primary liaison with the independent auditor to ensure the annual audit is completed smoothly and in a timely manner
- Ensure 1199SEIU’s investment portfolio is linked to impact, return, and risk and manage investment activity
- Monitor changes in legal, regulatory, and administrative environments and implement changes as needed to maintain compliance while maximizing operational and financial results
- Consistently evaluate and enhance financial systems, processes, and practices
Key Qualifications
- At least 10+ years of financial management in a senior leadership capacity
- Financial management experience with an organization with operations in excess of $50 million
- Comprehensive knowledge of Labor-Management Reporting and Disclosure Act (LMRDA) and non-profit financial practices and reporting requirements
- Experience working with advocacy, campaign or political organizations; labor union experience preferred
- Extensive knowledge of financial planning and management systems, along with accounting and financial reporting procedures in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
- Exceptional strategic and analytical thinking skills, with an ability to leverage financial information to drive informed budgetary and financial decisions
- Unquestionable ethics, self-motivation, reliability, and strong attention to detail
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders
- Knowledge of and experience with management of an investment portfolio
- Solid understanding of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA)
- Experience obtaining and maintaining union insurance, especially automobile and liability
- Ability to communicate complex financial concepts to a diverse set of stakeholders
- Deep commitment to working people and social and racial justice
- Experience with property management and real estate a plus
- CPA or Certified Management Accountant required
- A bachelor's degree and/or commensurate experience that demonstrates exemplary strategic and financial acumen
Physical Requirements, Direction and Decision Making
The position is based in New York, NY and is expected to work in the office four days a week.
The CFO reports directly to the Secretary-Treasurer.
Salary and Benefits
The salary range for the position is $225,000-$250,000, dependent on experience. 1199SEIU offers an excellent benefit package.
